EUGENE -- With individual championship performances from freshman Heidi Magill in the 1,500 meters, Aneta Lemiesz in the 800 meters, Rena Chesser in the steeplechase, Kamila Rywelska in the women's triple jump, Rodrigo Mendes in the men's triple jump and Robison Pratt and Trent Powell sharing the title in the pole vault, both the BYU men's and women's track teams earned fifth-place team finishes at the NCAA West Region Track & Field Championships.
Magill will represent BYU at the NCAA National Championships following a spectacular performance in the 1,500 meters. A native of Orem, Utah, Magill jumped out to an early lead in the event and set the pace for nearly 1,350 meters until Johanna Nilsson of Northern Arizona snatched the lead with just over 150 meters left in the race. Magill, running like a seasoned veteran however, pulled even with Nilsson with 40 meters left and regained the lead from the All-American to win the West Regional 1,500-meter title in a time of 4:18.19.
Magill ran the final 400 meters in 64.1 seconds to help shave over 11 seconds off her previous season-best time. Magill's performance ranks as the seventh fastest 1,500-meter time in BYU history.
"No one wanted to take the lead," Magill said. "I'm kind of surprised I won, actually. I knew I could probably make it to nationals, but there are a lot of fast girls here. It worked out well for me."
Lemiesz set a NCAA West Regional meet record in the 800 meters, dominating the event in a time of 2:03.90. A new personal-best for Lemiesz, her time not only ranks as the third fastest 800-meter time in school history, but also stands as the second fastest collegiate time in the nation this season.
The native of Aleksandrow Lodzki, Poland, jumped out to an early lead over the first 500 meters before extending her lead down the backstretch. Lemiesz then cruised down the home stretch for the uncontested victory.
Chesser won the second of two sections in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in personal-best time of 10:13.78, improving on her PR by more than 29 seconds. Her time was good enough for the overall victory in the event.
Despite winning the first of two sections in the event, junior Lisa Pratt finished sixth overall in a time of 10:24.64, and failed to earn one of five automatic-qualifying spots in the event. Pratt, the wife of pole-vaulter Robison Pratt, won the section after beating her previous season-best time by over 23 seconds. Junior Kristy Barrus finished second in the heat (13th overall) with a personal-best time of 10:41.25. Junior Sarah Ingebretsen finished fourth (17th overall) in time of 10:45.73.
The Cougars took the top-two places in the men's pole vault, picking up 18 team points for the men's team. After both Robison Pratt and Powell were the only two competitors to clear 17-01 in the pole vault, the BYU duo elected to end the competition after both failed to clear 17-09, giving each a share of the NCAA West Region title.
Rywelska needed her final attempt in the triple jump to edge past Stanford's Erica McLain to win the West Region title in the event. Rywelska, a native of Pastek, Poland, won the event in the sixth round with a distance of 42-10.75, beating McLain by 4.5 inches.
In the final event of the evening, Mendes won the triple jumpe with a mark of 55-05.00, beating Allem Simms of USC by just three-quarters of an inch.
In the men's 1,500 meters, senior Bryan Lindsay sat in his traditional spot at the back of the pack for the first 900 meters before making his move to the front of the pack. Over the final 400 meters, Lindsay passed several runners, including teammate Nathan Robison, to move into fifth place. Over the final 100 meters, Lindsay reeled in two more competitors to finish third and earn an automatic berth to the NCAA National Championship meet in Sacramento. Lindsay, the 2005 MWC 1,500-meter champion, finished the event in a time of 3:45.21, trimming nearly seven seconds of his previous season-best.
Robison, who won the event last year and finished second at the NCAA National Championship meet in Austin, Texas, finished in 10th place in a time of 3:55.82.
Two weeks after winning her fourth straight Mountain West Conference Outdoor high jump title, senior Lindsey Metcalf finished fourth with a height of 5-9.25 and improved on her fifth-place finish from a year ago. Metcalf cleared the height on her second attempt, but was unable to clear the next height, 5-11.25. As the fourth-place finisher, Metcalf will advance to the NCAA National Championships in Sacramento--the senior All-American's fourth appearance at the national championship meet.
Senior Lars Kjerengtroen finished seventh in the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:49.40. In an unexpectedly fast race, the top six finishers broke the old meet record of 1:49.27. Meet officials declared Washington's Ryan Brown the winner over UCLA's Jon Rankin by just .004.
Following a one-hour and 40 minute weather delay, junior Josh McAdams finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:41.56 to earn one of five automatic-qualifying spots for the National Championships in Sacramento. Freshman Chandler Goodwin finished 10th overall with a time of 8:51.98, while senior Matt Adams finished 24th with a time of 9:29.66.
Senior Maret Komarova finished 13th in the javelin with a distance of 142-06, while sophomore Tiffany Arrhenius finished 15th with a mark of 141-00.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Jacob Garlick, Bryan Payne, Ben Gardner and David Chesser won the first of two heats, but finished sixth overall with a time of 3:12.18.
Overall, the Cougars finished ahead 24 other teams, including Pac-10 opponents Cal, Arizona, Oregon, Washington and Washington State in the women's team competition. In the men's competition, BYU finished ahead of 18 other teams, including the likes of Stanford, Cal, Arizona, Washington and Washington State. USC ran away with the men's team title, while Stanford edged UCLA in the women's team competition.
All totaled, 13 BYU athletes in 12 events earned automatic bids to the NCAA National Championships in Sacramento.
