Daniel Vargas, a 6-1, 160, shortstop from San Diego's Montgomery High School is the only player BYU baseball inked a letter of intent with during the spring signing period.
Vargas had the second-best stolen base total in the Mesa League at 16-17 for his Aztecs who were league champions and posted a 21-11 overall record. He batted .276 and helped Montgomery to an 8-2 league mark.
"Daniel is a polished infielder who will provide needed depth for us at second base or shortstop," said BYU Coach Vance Law.
Two other Montgomery High alums currently play for BYU, shortstop Marcos Villezcas and outfielder Adrian Molina, who will be seniors in 2006 for the Cougars. BYU signed 14 players during last November's letter of intent period.
