Second baseman Sean McNaughton of BYU was named Wednesday to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team.
McNaughton, 5-8, 170, from Curtis High in Lakewood, Wash., was on Baseball America's Midseason Freshman All-America team. As BYU's lead-off batter, he tied a Mountian West Conference and school record by hitting two triples in the 18-5 victory over Air Force. He hit three doubles in game two at New Mexico State, tying his older brother. McNaughton also hit a pair of homers in game three at NMSU.
McNaughton hit 12 homers, 16 doubles and five triples with 44 hits, 43 RBI and batted .327 for BYU.
McNaughton missed several games mid-way through the league season because of a broken thumb in the final game vs. San Diego State in Provo. He had a 15-game hitting streak this past year with the Cougars and ended the season with a current six-game hitting streak. He will miss the next two seasons at BYU because he has accepted a Church mission call to Washington, D.C.
New Mexico second baseman Jordan Pacheco was the only other MWC player named to this freshman All-America team.
Previous BYU players who have been named to freshman All-America squads include Justin Su'a (2001), Matt Carson (2000), Dave Jensen (1999), Spencer Oborn (1997), Jeff Stone (1997), Brett McDermaid (1996), and Brad Winget (1995). Cory Snyder of BYU was selected as a freshman to an All-America squad in 1982 before freshmen were honored on their own teams.
