Day two of the Major League draft had three BYU connections.

Cougar senior southpaw pitchers Lance Beus and Ryan Chambers were taken by the Seattle Mariners and Chicago Cubs, respectively.

Beus was taken in the 28th round as the 833rd pick, while Chambers went in the 40th round as the 1,209th selection.

Clayton Mortensen, a 6-3, 175, right-handed pitcher, who had signed a letter of intent last November with BYU, was drafted in the 25th round as the 748th pick by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Mortensen, from Rexburg, Idaho, played at Treasure Valley Community College in Oregon.

Beus, 6-0, 180, from Meridian, Idaho, made his senior debut as game two's starting pitcher against New Mexico, after successfully rehabbing from arm surgery last fall. Beus was the winning pitcher in a 13-12 victory over San Diego State, then faced SDSU in San Diego a month later in a complete-game 4-3 victory. He started again against SDSU in BYU's opening game of the Mountain West Conference Tournament and secured the victory with a four-hitter in 6.2 innings in another 4-3 game. He posted a 3-1 record with a 5.06 earned run average as a senior.

Chambers, 6-0, 165, from Yucaipa, Calif., was selected to the MWC All-Tournament team and was voted All-MWC. He was MWC Player of the Week for games at New Mexico when he was also selected to the College Baseball Foundation National Honor Roll. Among his three saves this season was in the 4-3 opening round victory against San Diego State in the MWC Tournament. Chambers, who started as BYU's centerfielder, batted .352 with 12 homers and 20 doubles, and had three game-winning RBI. But the Cubs listed him as a pitcher in the draft. He had an 0-1 record in nine appearances and a 0.00 ERA in 8.2 innings with 14 strikeouts.

"Both Lance and Ryan wanted an opportunity, so I'm happy they got it," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "I hope they make the most of it."

BYU juniors Dave Horlacher and Brandon Taylor were drafted on Tuesday's opening day in the eighth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers and in the 17th round by the Cubs, respectively.
