COLORADO SPRINGS -- Seventy-one BYU student-athletes were awarded 2004-2005 Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athletes Monday, led by Lindsey Metcalf who was named 2005 MWC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
As a whole, BYU was led by the women's track team with 20 scholar-athletes. The men's track team was close behind adding 19 of its own, followed by men's swimming and diving (8), women's swimming and diving (8), baseball (7), men's basketball (2), women's softball (2), men's tennis (1), women's tennis (1), women's basketball (1), men's golf (1) and women's golf (1).
To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two semesters or three quarters at the certifying institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have competed in at least one varsity contest in their respective sport.
The Cougars' 71 recipients was second to New Mexico's conference-high 86 student-athletes on the list. After BYU, Utah had 69, followed by Wyoming (51), UNLV (46), San Diego State (37), Colorado State (30) and Air Force (28).
