Academic All-American Kory Knell leads the list of seven BYU baseball players named as Scholar-Athletes and 15 who were also named recently All-Academic by the Mountain West Conference.
Knell, a senior outfielder from Salt Lake City, who had a 3.90 grade point average in accounting and information systems, tops the list of the seven who made both lists. Other teammates who made both lists are pitchers Josh Barrett, 3.51 communications, a sophomore from Pleasant View; Brandon Christiansen, 3.50 sociology, a junior from West Jordan; Tyler Heid, 3.84 history, a junior from Glendale, Ariz.; James Platt, 3.63 exercise science, a junior from Cedar City; and Mitch Woolf, 3.92 in mechanical engineering, a junior from Rexburg, Idaho; and infielder Kevin Sloan, 3.51 P.E. Teaching, a freshman from Kansas City.
The remaining players named to the All-Academic team include: Thomas Bills, 3.20 undeclared, a freshman redshirt from Reno, Nev.; Casey Cloward, 3.28 construction management, a senior catcher from Spanish Fork; Jeff Hiestand, 3.06 health, a first baseman/outfielder from Chino, Calif.; Seth Iorg, 3.23 biology, from Pleasant Grove; Blair Lucas, 3.01, graduated with his bachelor's; Sean McNaughton, 3.07, undeclared, a freshman second baseman from Lakewood, Wash.; Brandon Romney, 3.32 Spanish, a junior redshirt from Dallas; and Justin Su'a, 3.02 communications, a junior pitcher from Torrance, Calif.
To be eligible for selection as a MWC Scholar-Athlete, student-athletes must have completed at least two or three quarters at the certifying institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have competed in at least one varsity contest in their respective sport.
To be eligible for an MWC All-Academic selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
