PROVO -- BYU's swimming and diving media guide won College Sports Information Directors of America's Best in the Nation award for design and content of a multi-sport media guide, while six other BYU Athletics' publications and three marketing efforts won top awards.
The elite swimming and diving guide, produced by Dave Broberg and Kyle Cottam, surpassed 24 other entries, including California State-Northridge (No. 2) and UNLV (No. 3) for the top ranking.
The men's volleyball media guide (produced by Broberg and Kyle Chilton) placed No. 6 in the nation in the single sport media guide category. Four other media guides earned distinguished top-three placements in each of their categories.
"We strive hard to be the best in the nation at what we do," said athletic publications director Dave Broberg. "It is nice to be recognized."
Three other media guides, including football (produced by Broberg, Jeff Reynolds and Jon Eyre), women's soccer (produced by Jared Neilson and Bryce Porter) and women's track and field (produced by Jared Neilson and Angie Wallace), all placed No. 2 in district eight. Men's basketball media guide (produced by Broberg and Brett Pyne) placed No. 3 in the district.
BYU also received national recognition in three of the 18 categories in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics' yearly awards. Two silver awards acknowledged BYU's marketing team: Tony Jewkes (marketing director), Emily Deans (director of Olympic sports), Todd Sleight (promotions) and Scott Holt (student intern).
A silver was awarded in the Single Newspaper Display Ad category for football and the Student Promotion Category for a poster advertising a movie night held at Miller Park.
BYU won a bronze award in the Promotional Schedule Poster category. The award was for the women's gymnastic poster. Broberg and Deans were behind the production of this national honor.
"We have a great team of talented individuals who put a lot of time and effort into making BYU Athletics look good," said Duff Tittle, associate athletics director for communications.
Media guides are written and edited for each sport by the Athletic Communications office and designed and produced by the Athletic Publications office. The publications office also works with the Athletic Marketing department to produce materials such as posters, magnets and pocket schedules for each sport.
