PROVO, Utah- (Sept. 13, 2005) -- The BYU men's tennis team begins its fall season Wednesday, playing in the Iman's Court Open at the BYU outdoor tennis courts.

This year's fall opener takes on a new look, as the Cougars move from an invitational format to a new, open format.

A Provo tennis store, Iman's Court, is running and sponsoring the event, which is being hosted by BYU.

The team decided to host an open tournament in order to get community members involved in BYU tennis. Along with athletes from Montana State, Colorado, Utah State, Weber State and BYU, residents of Utah County are welcome to compete.

Coach Brad Pearce, who will be playing doubles at the event, said he feels a tournament open to an entire community is the best way to gain support for BYU athletics.

"A big part of what we want to do with our tennis program is get people out supporting our team and get them familiar with college tennis," he said. "An effective way of doing that is by hosting an open tournament."

The Iman's Court Open begins Wednesday, Sept. 14 and runs through Saturday Sept. 17. The tournament will feature both singles and doubles play. Wednesday's matches begin at 3 p.m. Matches on Thursday and Friday will start at 10 a.m., and Saturday's matches begin at 11 a.m.
