PROVO, Utah -- BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe has announced a new program, Y Games, in an effort to promote a support system for the 536 student-athletes that will be competing this year.
The objective is to have student-athletes support each other in their contests. Each BYU team chose one event from their home schedule to be their Y Game and to receive the additional support of fellow student-athletes. Then all teams on campus, students, the Cougar Club and the community are invited to attend that competition to provide a Cougar crowd atmosphere for some of the most important games of the year.
"If student-athletes, students on campus and the community are going to go to just one game all year, the Y game is the one we want people to come to," Holmoe said. "This then provides support, energy and enthusiasm for our teams and we get large crowds at the events."
BYU Athletics hopes the Y Games program will generate momentum and excitement, not only for student-athletes but also for the entire BYU student community. The Athletic Department anticipates the Y Games will become a tradition of support for student-athletes.
The first Y Game will be showcased by the undefeated, No. 15 women's soccer team this Friday, September 23, as they compete against No. 9 California at South Stadium, 7 p.m.
