PROVO -- The BYU women's soccer game was all but over after eight minutes of play, as No. 13 BYU (13-1-1. 2-1-0) took no time avenging last year's Mountain West Conference Tournament loss, scoring four goals in the opening minutes and overwhelming Air Force (4-11-1, 0-3-0), 6-0. Junior Bobbi Tillotson netted four goals on the night, tying the BYU record for most goals in a game by a single player.
"Hopefully that's a big confidence booster [for Tillotson]," head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "She's playing some of the best soccer of her career, but the goals just haven't been there yet. We need her and we need her to score goals."
After a disappointing game against TCU in which Tillotson saw numerous scoring opportunities, she came out playing with undaunted determination. Just six minutes into the contest, Tillotson was credited with the first goal of the game after taking a corner kick, which deflected off an Air Force defender into the net, resulting in an own-goal.
A whopping 29 seconds later, Katie Larkin went streaking down the left side of the field, passing the ball to Tillotson who sent a left-footed, arching chip shot into the opposite corner of the net.
One minute and thirty seconds after that Larkin gained control of the ball 25 yards out and blasted a left-footer just past the leaping Falcon goalkeeper into the far-side netting, resulting in Larkin's third goal of the season.
Larkin then dribbled through three defenders in the 20th minute, crossing the ball beautifully in front of the net and setting up Bobbi Tillotson for her third goal of the game off a header. Tillotson's hat trick is the first of her career and BYU's second of the season. Freshman Jessica Aquino posted the first hat trick against Weber State on Sept. 2.
The Cougars' four first-half goals came on only seven shots.
The fifth goal of the game came in the 62nd minute. After showcasing some fancy footwork in the right corner of the field, Jaime Rendich Beck crossed the ball to Tillotson who volleyed the ball into the net. Tillotson is only the third player in BYU history to net four goals in a single game.
"I was feeling disappointed after last game because I had so many good looks," Tillotson said. "I've spent a lot of time at practice shooting and it paid off. And of course I had my great teammates to back me up and give me nice balls."
With just over three minutes remaining in the game, Katie Fellows sent a cross to the right hand corner of the net. The Falcon goalkeeper dove to intercept the pass but mishandled it, allowing Brooke Bowman to pick up the trash and score her second goal of the season.
The Cougars face Wyoming on Saturday at 6 p.m. on the South Stadium field. Last season BYU lost to the Cowgirls 3-2 in overtime.
"Wyoming beat us for the first time last year and outplayed us," Rockwood said. "They deserved that win. We'll have our hands full Saturday."
