ALBERTA -- BYU earned a split in day one of the Husky Energy Can-AM Challenge with a loss to Trinity Western and a victory over Ryerson. The Cougars will play two more matches tomorrow, Saturday.
BYU dropped the first match in four games (25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 23-25) to Trinity Western. Taylor Evans had 12 kills and four digs to lead the Cougars while Steve Rogalsky had 16 kills and five digs for the Spartans. Russell Holmes added 11 kills and six blocks for BYU.
The Cougars were solid in game one, leading from start to finish and out-hitting Trinity Western .296 (14-6-27) to .160 (10-6-25) to earn the 25-21 win. From there BYU could not get its offense in sync, hitting .222 or lower in the final three games.
The Spartans controlled games two and three as they led for the majority of each game. The Cougars had a chance in the fourth, leading 12-9 and having the score tied at 19 before the Spartans got ahead 22-20 and held on for the win.
BYU hit .212 (53-28-118) for the match and had 29 digs, five aces and 9.5 blocks while Trinity Western hit .296 (47-18-98), had 30 digs, five aces and 10.0 blocks.
Against Ryerson, the Cougars won in four games (25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 25-15), taking the first two over the Rams before dropping the third and then clinching in the fourth. Game one was BYU's best hitting game of the day as the Cougars hit .400 (13-3-25). BYU struggled in the second, hitting just .125 (11-8-24) but still winning 25-18 thanks to Ryerson's -.182 (4-8-22) percentage.
The Rams dominated the third, out-hitting the Cougars .500 (13-3-20) to .000 (7-7-19). BYU came back with a solid performance in the fourth to earn a 25-15 win.
Evans again led the Cougars, registering 10 kills while hitting .561 (10-1-16). Ivan Perez had 12 kills while Brian Rowley added six digs, Victor Batista had five aces and Rob Neilson dished out 29 assists.
For the match, BYU hit .202 (39-22-84) and had 25 digs, five aces and 11.0 blocks. The Rams hit .137 (40-26-102) and had 20 digs and 6.0 blocks.
The Cougars will play the host school the University of Alberta at 12 p.m. tomorrow and conclude their weekend in Canada by playing the University of British Columbia at 6:30 p.m.
