ALBERTA -- The Cougars managed a .500 (2-2) finish at the Husky Energy Can-AM Challenge by concluding the weekend with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-21) win over the University of British Columbia. BYU opened the day with a 3-0 loss to the University of Alberta.
Victor Batista led the Cougars against British Columbia, registering 10 kills on a .643 hitting percentage (10-1-14) and six blocks. Both numbers were match highs. Taylor Evans added eight kills while Rob Neilson had 32 assists.
BYU played its best all-around match of the weekend, hitting .319 (36-13-72) and recording 11.5 blocks and 28 digs. The Cougars limited British Columbia to a .115 (32-22-87) hitting percentage, 4.0 blocks and 20 digs. In the third game, BYU hit .522 (15-3-23), its best hitting game of the weekend.
The Cougars lost their first match on Saturday to the University of Alberta, 3-0 (30-32, 21-25, 18-25). BYU trailed throughout the entire first game before tying the game at 24 and then taking the lead at 25-24. Bryan Stewart and Batista each had kills that gave the Cougars leads at 26-25 and 27-26 but BYU was unable to capitalize, eventually losing 32-30 to the Bears.
BYU also had its chances in the second, leading 20-18 before being outscored 7-1 to lose 25-21. In game three, Alberta built an 11-point lead at 19-8 and coasted to a 25-18 win to seal the match. Evans had eight kills while hitting .316 (8-2-19). Russell Holmes hit a team-best .667 (6-0-9) and added three blocks. Nicholas Cundy registered a match-high 11 kills while Adam Kaminski hit .900 (9-0-10) for the Bears.
