LAS -- The BYU women's golf team fell two spots to 14th place at the Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown on Tuesday, shooting an 18-over-par 306 in the second round after posting a 304 on Monday.
No. 2 UCLA has built a 12-stroke lead over second-place Arizona at the par-72 Anthem Country Club, while No. 3 Pepperdine, No. 12 UNLV and Kent State fill spots three through five.
The Cougars' low round was a 3-over 75, shot by both junior Rachel Newren and sophomore Juli Wightman, while sophomore Ashley Childers and junior Alexis Edwards added a pair of 78's.
"It's been a disappointing trip so far," BYU head coach Sue Nyhus said. "I expected everybody to play better, but we're making a lot of poor decisions."
Newren provided a bright spot for the Cougars to save a spiraling second round by carding an eagle on the par-5 No. 7, leading her to score par on her final two holes and finish at 3-over.
Wightman also shared success on No. 7, firing a birdie to bring her back to 3-over. After bogeying the first three holes of the round, she managed to shoot even on the remaining 15 holes to earn a 75.
BYU will finish the tournament and its fall season on Wednesday, and Nyhus said her team should be focused to improve entering the winter break.
"They need to remember that winners never quit, and they need to remember how to manage the course,' Nyhus said. "We've got one more day and I know we're capable of shooting under par. I expect our team to be fired up for the last round of the fall season."
