COLORADO SPRINGS -- BYU sophomore Chelsea Goodman earned Mountain West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week honors, marking her second weekly award of the season and her career.
"Chelsea has matured and continues to excel in the outside hitter position," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "Last week on the road she was very consistent and was a big contributor to our success in closing out the regular season with two road wins."
Goodman, a 5-11 sophomore from Mesa, Ariz., led the Cougars to conference wins over San Diego State and UNLV last week, helping the Cougars clinch their first outright MWC regular-season title since 1999. Against the Aztecs, she recorded 16 kills and 11 digs for her 10th double-double of the season, hitting a career-high .452 in the process as BYU clinched the regular-season crown with its sweep of SDSU. Goodman also tallied three total blocks and an assist vs. San Diego State. She followed with her second double-double of the weekend (11th on the season) vs. UNLV with 21 kills and 13 digs. She also had a block, service ace and an assist in BYU's four-game victory over the Rebels.
For the week, Goodman averaged 5.29 kills, 3.43 digs and 0.57 blocks per game. She also had four total blocks, two assists and a service ace. Her hitting percentage of .438 (37-5-73) last week was almost .200 points over her season average. Goodman finished the regular season leading the MWC in kills per game (4.34) and second on the team in digs per game (2.45).
