Summerhays: Lone Bright Spot in Tournament
Alpharetta, GA -- The Cougars closed out a performance they would soon like to forget Tuesday as they finished eleventh overall in a field of thirteen at the U.S. Collegiate Championship.
Although the tournament was stacked with the top ranked teams in the country, Coach Bruce Brockbank was very disappointed with his team's showing.
"If someone had told me before the tournament that we would finish in eleventh place, I would not have believed them for a second," Brockbank said. "We just played terrible here."
On a positive note, however, Sophomore Daniel Summerhays shot one under par for the final two rounds finishing in tenth place for the tournament. It was Summerhays first top ten finish of the season.
Summerhays said he was pleased with the way he played. "I felt I drove the ball better than I have for a long time," he said. "I was also hitting my irons pretty good. It's a tough course here."
Coach Brockbank also noted the difficulty of the course.
"Honestly, this is the toughest course that we have played in ten years," Brockbank said. "The greens were very fast, and there wasn't much room for error."
The Cougars, however, are not hanging their heads and are eager to return home for the Ping Cougar Classic which begins this weekend.
Summerhays said he is confident that the team will play well on their home turf Friday. "We believe we can compete with the best teams in the nation," he said. "We'll turn things around this weekend."
The Ping Cougar Classic will be played at The Riverside Country Club in Provo, April 14-15.
