PROVO -- It was a tale of two games for the Cougars on Tuesday as they cruised to a 7-0 victory over Utah State in game one of a doubleheader before falling 11-7 in extra innings in the night cap. With the split, BYU moves to 21-13 on the year.
"I think we got back on track with our hitting, but I'm disappointed in our pitching," said BYU head coach Gordon Eakin. "Seven runs should be enough to win the game. We played a lot of players to deal with our injury problems, and it didn't pay off in game two. If we had've kept in our starting lineup, the outcome probably would've been a lot different."
Ianeta Le'I came up big for the Cougars in both games, totaling three hits, including two homeruns, three runs and six runs batted in. Andrea Ramirez was also hot for BYU, going 4-for-4 with two runs and one run batted in. Emi Snow added four hits in six appearances while bringing in four runs.
Cougar pitcher Summer Tobias also split on the day, moving to 9-7 on the season. Tobias gave up just three hits in a complete game one with one walk and six strikeouts but struggled in game two, pitching three innings of relief and giving up five hits, three earned runs and one walk with two strikeouts.
BYU will next be in action on Saturday at Miller Park with a doubleheader against in-state and Mountain West Conference rival Utah. The first game will begin at 1 p.m.
"We just need to keep hitting the ball the way we are and get our pitching to get the job done," said Eakin.
The Cougars were nearly flawless in the first game of the day as they cruised to their eighth shutout victory of the year with 10 hits and no errors.
BYU started the game off hot with two home runs in the first three batters. Ramirez went yard to lead off the game, and Le'I pounded her seventh homerun of the year over the fence after Krystle Chamberlain singled, giving BYU a three-run lead.
Tobias issued her only walk of the game to the first Aggie batter but cruised from there, recording six strikeouts on the day. BYU retired Utah State in order in four out of seven innings while the Aggies posted three errors to help the Cougar offense.
Ramirez went 2-for-2 in the game with one run and one run batted in. Le'I also came up big for BYU, recording two hits, two runs and three runs batted in in her four plate appearances. Chamberlain, Lindi Kennedy, Stephanie Platt and Paige Paramore all scored runs for the Cougars.
Utah State roared back in the first inning of game two, scoring two runs on three two-out hits. The Aggies also stranded two runners.
Le'I responded with her second homerun of the day, a two-run shot over the right-center field fence to bring in Ramirez and tie the game at 2-2. The next batter, Ashlyn Russell, singled and advanced to second on a balk, putting her in position for Snow to single her home and give the Cougars a 3-2 lead at the end of the first inning.
Utah State's Quela Leonhardt kept the homerun derby alive in the top of the second, putting a two-run shot over the fence in right field to give the Aggies a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the inning, new Aggie pitcher Heather Straight issued two straight walks, allowing the Cougars to load the bases on a single from Ramirez. Chamberlain then stepped to the plate and singled home Jodi Norton, once again tying the game. The Aggies finally recorded the three outs needed to end the inning but not before an error allowed another run to score, giving BYU a 5-4 lead.
Cougar pitcher Brooke Boyce settled down in the third inning, retiring the Aggies in order. BYU's Cortney Nix recorded a single in the bottom of the inning but was left stranded. Utah State also left a runner stranded in the top of the fourth inning, preserving BYU's 5-4 lead. The bottom of the fourth was more of the same as the Cougars could not get Ramirez home after a lead-off single.
BYU's Nix tripled to the right field fence with two outs in the bottom of the fifth before a double from Norton brought her home. A grounder to the pitcher ended the inning but not before the Cougars took a 6-4 lead. The Aggies responded in the top of the sixth, scoring one run before BYU's Tobias was called in to relieve Boyce. However, Tobias had trouble getting out of the jam, allowing two of Boyce's runners to score before ending the side. Utah State batted around in the top of the inning while regaining the lead, 7-6.
Ramirez led off the bottom of the sixth with a four-pitch walk and reached third on an errant throw following a single by Chamberlain. A steal by Chamberlain opened up first base for the Aggies, who elected to walk Cougar power-hitter Russell to load the bases. A two-out single from Snow allowed the Cougars to make the most of the opportunity, scoring Ramirez to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the seventh inning.
BYU retired the side in order in the top of the seventh, giving the Cougars the chance to win the game in the bottom half. Norton started BYU off on the right path with a fly ball over the head of the second baseman. But the magic would not last as Tracee Hoch hit into a double play to clear the bases. A strikeout on the next batter preserved the tie and sent the game into extra innings.
Utah State found its bats again in the top of the eighth inning a long bomb from Amanda Carver hit the scoreboard over the right field fence. Carver's homerun scored two runs for the Aggies as they started the extra inning with a runner on second per collegiate softball regulations. Three batters later, another two-run shot extended the Utah State lead to 11-7.
The Cougars came up in the bottom of the inning looking to make up the difference, but could not overcome the deficit, stranding two runners while falling 11-7.
