PROVO -- The Cougars got back into Mountain West Conference play in style Saturday afternoon with two wins over instate rival Utah. The 3-1 and 4-2 victories improved the Cougars to 23-13 overall and 4-2 in MWC play while snapping the Utes' six-game winning streak and dropping them to 21-12 and 2-2.
"These were two big wins for us against a really good Utah team," said BYU assistant coach Vaughn Alvey. "We got great pitching and timely hitting. Things just went our way."
Both pitchers went the distance for BYU. Summer Tobias picked up the game-one win to move to 10-7 on the year while allowing one run and three hits in seven innings with four strikeouts. Daniella Urincho moved to 8-5 with the game-two win while allowing two runs on four hits.
"Both of our pitchers threw very well today," said BYU coach Gordon Eakin. "It's easier to get our offense going when our pitching is on."
Jennifer Whiteley went 2-for-3 on the day with two runs scored while walking once and reaching once on an error. Andrea Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a homerun, her third of the year. Jodi Norton added her seventh long ball of the year on a 1-for-6 performance with two runs batted in.
The Cougars will next be in action on Tuesday as they host a doubleheader against Southern Utah. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Ramirez got game one rolling in the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff single into left field. However, Ute pitcher Meghan Dyer recorded three straight strikeouts to end the inning and strand Ramirez. After being retired in order in the top half of the first, Utah responded with a leadoff single of its own in the top of the second but could not advance the runner any further.
BYU's Whiteley hit a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the second and then stole second with Norton at the plate. The third baseperson made the most of the scoring opportunity, hitting a bomb over the left field fence to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead going into the third inning.
The Cougar offense got going again in the third inning as Ramirez led off with a walk and then moved to second on a single from Krystle Chamberlain. But three balls hit high in the air were easily fielded to end the inning.
Down 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning, it looked to be more of the same for the Utes as their first two batters were thrown out until Devina Quintero stepped to the plate and belted one into left field. The ball clanked off the foul pole and was ruled a homerun, cutting the BYU lead to one run at 2-1.Utah threatened again in the inning with runners on first and second but a ground out to Norton ended the side and preserved the Cougar lead.
Ramirez once again made noise for the Cougars in the leadoff spot as she lined one just over the fence in left-center field to start the bottom of the fifth inning, building BYU's lead back up to two runs. The Utes could not get anything going in the sixth and seventh innings as Tobias fanned two of the last three batters she faced to give the Cougars the 3-1 win.
The Cougars capitalized on Ute miscues early in game two, getting three runs in the first inning with the help of two walks, a Utah error and a wild pitch. Chamberlain, Whiteley and Jana Anderson, who ran for Le'I, all crossed home plate as the Cougars took it one base at a time and advanced runners the old fashioned way with two hits, a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt. Ute pitcher Karina Cannon finally ended the inning with two strikeouts but not before BYU had taken the early 3-0 lead.
The Utes finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning as a double from Ivette Hernandez brought home Sharee Fonoti, who took first on a fielder's choice and then stole second, to cut the BYU lead to 3-1.
Tracee Hoch led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to the right-field fence, her second of the game, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chamberlain. Emi Snow then came on to pinch hit and did her job well, hitting Hoch home to push the lead back to three runs at 4-1.
A leadoff triple in the top of the sixth inning followed by a sacrifice fly made a dent in the BYU lead and gave the Utes comeback hopes down 4-2. However, that was as close as Utah could get as the Utes were retired in order in the seventh inning to end the game.
