PROVO -- With the season-opener at Arizona (Sept. 2) less than one month away, the BYU football team reported to fall camp Friday in preparation for the first practice Saturday afternoon.
"We're excited to get going," BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "We're optimistic and excited for the 2006 season. We're anxious to get to work out on the practice field tomorrow."
Up to 105 players are expected to participate in fall camp. Players reported to orientation meetings and physicals on Friday before the start of practice on Saturday.
BYU will have single practices through the first week of camp, and will begin two-a-days on Friday, Aug. 11 through Monday, Aug. 21. All totaled, the team will have 29 practice opportunities before the season-opener against the Wildcats.
Newcomers, including incoming freshman and junior-college transfers will practice Saturday afternoon. Later in the afternoon, the veterans will hold a 90-minute practice. The entire team will begin practicing together for the first time on Tuesday, Aug. 8.
A total of four practices will be open to the public this season. The first practice open to the public will be Monday, Aug. 14, beginning at 10 a.m. The three remaining open practices are Aug. 16, 18 and 21 all beginning at 10 a.m. Practices will be held on the practice fields, located north of the Student Athlete Building.
