COLUMBUS -- BYU's Jenny Miccoli and Anastasia Sourkova won their first round match Thursday at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships to earn a spot in the quarterfinals Friday.
BYU's top tandem beat Ohio State's Julie Blackmore and Caitlin O'Keefe on their home courts 8-3 and are confident about their chances Friday. Texas Christian University's Ana Cetnik and Anna Sydorska knocked off the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the nation to win a shot at Miccoli and Sourkova.
"Whenever we play well it doesn't matter who we're playing against," Sourkova said. "Winning and losing doesn't matter as long as we're happy with our performance. We're playing well and just excited to be here."
Miccoli echoed Sourkova's sentiments about wins and losses and said she and Sourkova are on the same page in every aspect of their game.
"We were both nervous when the tournament started because this is a big tournament," Miccoli said. "Once we settled down, though, we started having fun and things went our way."
The girls' attitude towards the game can be attributed to the philosophy of their head coach, Craig Manning.
"These girls have been playing well for a while now," Manning said. "I'm sure they'll keep playing well and we'll see what happens. These are great girls and they deserve all the success they achieve."
Miccoli and Sourkova will start their match at 10 a.m. MST Friday at Ohio State. The BYU men's tennis team will also be in action Friday as they travel to play in the UNLV Rebel Classic against Illinois, Arkansas, UNLV and others.
