COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- UNLV's Elliot Wronski and BYU's Anastasia Surkova have been named the Mountain West Conference men's and women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively.
In his lone match of the week, Wronski shocked the nation's third-ranked singles player, defeating Wake Forest's Todd Paul in straight sets (6-1, 7-5) during his team's 6-1 loss to 12th-ranked Wake Forest on Monday. Before the upset, Paul, who was ranked No. 1 in the nation as recently as March 5, was 10-0 in 2007 and had not lost even a set in dual matches this season. Wronski, a sophomore from Cheltenham, England, improved to 7-3 in duals, 10-6 overall and 25-10 in his young career at UNLV. Wronski and partner Brett Hunter were also competitive in doubles play, falling to the 31st-ranked team of Paul and Mariusz Adamski, 8-5, at the top position.
Surkova, a junior from Moscow, Russia, won both of her matches against ranked players last week when No. 2 Notre Dame came to Provo. In the doubles competition, she and teammate Jenny Miccoli won their seventh consecutive match, posting an 8-3 win over the fifth-ranked doubles team of Christian Thompson and Catrina Thompson. In singles play, Surkova matched up with the No. 89 player in the nation, Christian Thompson, and beat her in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. That win was also Surkova's seventh singles win in a row, all of which have come in straight sets. During that run, opponents have won four games in a set only twice against Surkova.
