PROVO -- The outdoor season got underway in Monterey, Mexico this past weekend and several athletes had regional qualifying marks. Sandra Mazan broke the facility record in the 400-meter hurdles and Matt Lawrenson broke the facility record in the dicsus. Both the BYU men's and women's teams placed second behind Texas A&M at the competition.
"I think we're about where we should be this time of the season," BYU women's head coach Craig Poole said. "I am very pleased that we had four athletes qualify for regionals. Sandra [Mazan] did a great job in the 400 hurdles and I am excited about the outdoor season."
For the women, Mazan qualified in the 400-meter hurdles, Amber Duffin in the 5000 meters, Julene Kaufusi in the pole vault, and Tiffany Arrhenius in the javelin.
Carlee Clark finished second in the 1500 meters with a career best 4:28.74. Then she came back and won the 800 meters in a time of 2:11.15. Julie Meads finished just behind Clark in both races. Carolyn Quebe scored points in both events as well. In all, Clark, Meads, and Quebe scored 26 points in the two events.
The men had Lawrenson qualify in the discus, Chris Carter in the 400 meters, Ammon Dahl in the high jump and Dustin McDonald in the javelin.
The Cougar men took three of the top four places in the 110-meter hurdles. Nate Rencher finished second in a time of 14.35, only .05 seconds from the regional mark. Nate Page finished third and Carter finished fourth. Though the men took only 15 athletes, 12 athletes scored points.
