PROVO -- While most of the BYU men's and women's track team is resting and focusing on finals, a few of the men's team members traveled up to Salt Lake City to compete at the Utah Twilight.
"The best performance was probably Boian Marinov, who jumped over 23 feet," said assistant coach Kyle Grossarth. "He had a really good series of jumps over 22 feet. Nate Rencher ran just off his season best and Jake Garlick ran a new season best in the 400 hurdles. A couple guys wanted to run and improve their performances and get geared up for our home meet next weekend."
Marinov won the long jump with his season best jump of 23 feet 2 inches. Brad Ellertson tied for first in the pole vault at 16 feet even, while Alex Green tied for third. Randy Patterson won the shot put with a throw of 51 feet 7.25 inches, a new season best. Colby Barber came in second place in the shot put. Garlick won the 110-meter hurdles, with Justin Bingham taking second. Nate Rencher won the 400 hurdles in a time of 52.57. Garlick set a new season best time in the 400 hurdles at 53.47. Drew Foster won the 800 meters with his season best time of 1:54.34.
There were 12 athletes that competed at the Utah Twilight and a few throwers, including All-American Niklas Arrhenius, competed in San Diego at the Triton Invitational.
"The main focus this week is on academics," BYU men's head coach Mark Robison. "We just want the athletes to get their tests taken and focus on that and if they wanted to go to Salt Lake they could."
The No. 18 BYU women's team only had throwers participating in the Utah Twilight this weekend. They too are focusing on exams and getting ready for the Robison Invitational. Tipaleli Fotu came in third in the hammer throw with her throw of 173 feet 1 inch. Tiffany Arrhenius won the javelin throw with a mark of 146 feet 9 inches. Kelly Jackson took third with a throw of 121 feet 7 inches. Megan Tyler took third in the discus with a throw of 131 feet even. Tyler also took third in the shot put with her season best mark of 40 feet 7.5 inches.
