PROVO -- Thursday's Spring practice focused on situational drills as BYU football put its attention on detail at the end of the third week.

"We added situational drills we have felt are needed," head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "Our goal is to build up into next Saturday's scrimmage (the Blue and White game)."

During position drills, the team took a break to work on field goal kicking. Freshman kicker Mitch Payne was effective from short and long range as the kicking team moved back after every successful kick. Payne only missed his final kick from over 40 yards out.

In the team segment, the defense and offense both made big plays. The defense ruled the early part of the drill. The offense responded in the middle of the drill before the defense made plays at the end.

Team drills were also focused on specific situations. The offense worked on "going out" and "Blue Zone" drills. In "going out" drills, the offense starts with the ball on the three-yard line and tries to establish a drive while the defense attempts to keep the offense pinned inside its own five. The defense had success, allowing a single first down on only two of the four drives. The offense wasn't able to move the ball beyond the 25-yard line.

In the "Blue Zone" drills, the offense scored on its first four tries. The defense countered with an interception and a missed field goal to finish the practice segment.

Ryan Folsom and Harvey Unga each had touchdown runs of seven and three yards, respectively. Cade Cooper had a six-yard touchdown pass to Michael Reed and Mitch Payne added a field goal. Chris Bolden came up with the interception for the defense.

Cooper, who worked with the first-team offense, completed 4-of-8 passes for 62 yards with the touchdown and the interception. Max Hall completed 6-of-11 passes for 39 yards.
