Colorado Springs, Colo. (May 2, 2007) Senior Lauren Jones, from Mission Viejo, Calif., a member of the 28th ranked BYU Women's Tennis Team, was named MWC Tennis Player of the Week, Wednesday.
It is the first honor for Jones this season, and her third overall. She posted a pair of doubles victories and three singles wins as BYU captured its fourth Mountain West Conference Tournament championship last week in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Jones, who plays for the Cougars in the no. 2 position in both singles and doubles, registered the clinching decision in all three matches. She defeating Colorado State's Lauren Strasburger (6-1, 6-1) in the quarterfinals, New Mexico's Sandra Zmak (6-0, 6-0) in the semifinals and UNLV's Kristina Nedeltcheva (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) in the championship.
She also helped secure BYU's first points in two of those matches, teaming with doubles partner Dolly Chang at No. 2 for an 8-2 quarterfinal win over CSU's Strasburger and Anette Pohjalainen and an 8-2 semifinal victory against New Mexico's Ola Abou-Zekry and Jennifer Ryba.
Jones finished the regular season with a 6-1 mark vs. MWC opponents.
