PROVO -- The BYU Cougars are off to a strong start to the 2007-08 athletic season.
Contributing to the Cougars' success, the women's volleyball team has won all five of its matches and the women's soccer team (1-0) defeated Michigan State on Friday. Football is also 1-0 after its victory Saturday over Arizona.
The Cougars will have many opportunities to prove their abilities this week as they face additional competition.
The No. 9 BYU women's volleyball team will head to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Invitational to face No. 17 Cal Poly on Thursday, Saint Mary's on Friday and No. 2 Cardinal on Saturday. The Cougars need two wins to become only the fourth Division I women's program to ever achieve 1,000 victories.
After a season-opening victory, the football team is also traveling to California and will take on No. 13-ranked UCLA Saturday.
BYU women's soccer, ranked No. 19, will play its second and third games of the season on the road at Kansas on Thursday and at No. 20 Colorado on Saturday.
The BYU men's and women's cross country teams begin their seasons on Saturday when they host the Autumn Classic at East Bay Golf Course -- the only home meet of the season. Both teams are preseason favorites to win the Mountain West Conference title. The women's 5k race begins at 10 a.m. and the men's four-mile race starts at 10:50 a.m.
Admission to the Autumn Classic is $3 for adults and $2 for students with ID while children age five and under are admitted for free. Any youth age 14 or under who wears his/her track or cross country uniform is admitted for free.
