PROVO -- At the conclusion of a long day of tennis, Kristina Doerr is the lone Cougar remaining in the singles tournament of the BYU Invitational. Doerr defeated two opponents Friday afternoon and will prepare to play in one final match to conclude the tournament.
In the quarterfinal round Doerr won a hard battle against Utah's Emily Kwok. She then went on to defeat Boise State's Kokoulina Polina with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
"I felt really well," said Doerr. "I was focusing on one thing and that was stepping up and moving my feet. I played much better than yesterday."
Tomorrow Doerr will face Utah's Liz Ferris who is ranked No. 88 in the preseason national polls.
"Kristina played well. That was really high level tennis," said head coach Craig Manning.
In the quarterfinals, freshman Elizaveta Ezhova lost in two sets to Utah's Leigh Walsh.
Doerr excelled in doubles play as well. She and her partner, newcomer Elle Carney, defeated Utah's Erin Monson and Karine Bourdages with a close 9-7 score.
In other doubles action, Jocelyn Jensen and Dolly Chang defeated another pair of Utes, Kwok and Cheyenne Reveche.
Around midday Manning gathered his team together to discuss several concerning issues he had noticed. According to Manning, everyone played amazingly well following the meeting.
"It's going good on all accounts," said Manning. "We played some really good tennis and had a good attitude. I'm really happy with everybody."
Play will resume tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. with the doubles final. The singles final will follow at noon. All matches will be played at the BYU outdoor tennis courts.
The BYU outdoor tennis courts are located just south of the Smith Fieldhouse and the entrance is on the east side. Public parking is not available on Thursday or Friday in the BYU Y parking lots until 4 p.m., but all BYU lots are open to the public all day Saturday. In case of inclement weather, play will resume at the indoor tennis courts adjacent to the outdoor facility.
