Gillespie-Carling Named Preseason All-MWC
LITTLETON -- Senior Mallary Gillespie-Carling was named to the 2007-08 Mountain West Conference Preseason All-Conference Team, and BYU was picked to finish third in conference play.
Gillespie was BYU's leading scorer in the 2006-07 season, averaging 13.6 points per game. She also led BYU to the 2007 MWC regular-season title, and was named all-MWC second-team and the championship all-tournament team. She ranked third in the MWC last season for 3-point field-goals made (2.3 pg) and broke the 1,000 point barrier against Louisville in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
BYU received one vote to win the conference. In the 2006-07 season, the Cougar team clinched back-to-back MWC Regular Season Champions' tittles with a 12-4 record, and garnered back-to-back Coach of the Year honors and back-to-back MWC Co-Player of the Year accolades.
"It's a fair placement for us," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. "TCU and Wyoming have more returning players than we do. Even after losing three starters people still believe in our program."
Marked by impressive wins over no. 4 Stanford, a Final Four finish in the 2006 Preseason WNIT and back-to-back wins over instate rival Utah, the BYU team picked up coach Judkins' third 20-plus-wins season.
The season kicks off with an exhibition game at home against Westminster College at 7 p.m. on Oct. 30. The regular season will begin at UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 9.
