PROVO -- BYU freshman running back Harvey Unga has been named to the Rivals Freshman All-America Second Team.
Unga, who has compiled 1,050 rushing yards and 600 receiving yards, is the Cougars' all-time leading freshman running back and the first BYU freshman to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in a single season. He holds the school record for most 100-yard rushing games as a freshman with six.
The six-feet, 220-pound Provo native is the first freshman All-American out of BYU since Jan Jorgensen was named a freshman All-American in 2006. Unga is the second freshman to earn All-America honors during Bronco Mendenhall's tenure as BYU head coach. Austin Collie, a sophomore receiver for the Cougars, also earned Freshman All-America honors in 2004 before serving a two-year church mission.
Unga, a two-time Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week, needs just 166 yards heading into Saturday's game against San Diego State to become the MWC all-time leading freshman running back.
