Mears and Sanchez Enter So Cal Semifinals

LOS -- BYU men's doubles pair Cassidy Mears and Jonathan Sanchez recorded big wins on Friday to advance to the semifinals at the So Cal Intercollegiate Championships in Los Angeles.

The Cougars recorded an 8-3 win against a pair from Azusa Pacific in the round of 16 to advance in the tournament. Next they upset Jeremy Drean and Michael Look, the No. 1 seed duo from UCLA, 8-6.

Continuing in doubles play, freshmen Daniel Hwang and Evan Urbina were victorious against a second pair from Azusa Pacific, but were defeated by the No. 4 seed from UCLA, 8-2.

Sanchez will also advance to the semifinals of the singles main backdraw after defeating UC-Riverside's Quoc Doan.

In the final match of the qualifying singles backdraw, A.J. Young was pitted against fellow Cougar, Tyler Clonts. Young posted a victory in the hard-fought 6-4, 6-0 match.
