Flagstaff, Ariz. (Jan. 19, 2007) -- The BYU men's and women's track teams finished their second indoor meet of the season at the Northern Arizona Lumberjack Invitational on Saturday, gaining more and more experience as they head into the meat of the season.
Some highlights from the men's side were the marks of BYU senior high jumper Bryce Bergen, freshman long jumper Chase Dalton and senior pole vaulter Matt Weirich. Bergen finished tied for first in the high jump, clearing 6-09.75. Dalton, from Tigard, Ore., won the long jump, clearing 21-04.75, and Weirich, from Fredericksburg, Tex., set a national provisional mark of 17-00.75 in the pole vault.
On the women's side, freshman Mindy Robins and sophomore Kindy Longmore garnered second-place finishes in their respective events. Robins, from Salt Lake City, long jumped 17-06.75, and Longmore, from Iona, Idaho, ran a 25.28 in the 200 meters.
In preparation for upcoming meets at lower altitudes, both teams didn't travel with their full distance squads.
The teams are young, and the athletes are trying to get as much competitive experience under their belts as the indoor season moves along. In just five weeks, both teams will be vying for Mountain West Conference championships.
Next weekend the teams will head to Lincoln, Neb., for the Nebraska Holiday Inn Invitational. Competition begins on Friday, Jan. 25, and ends on Saturday, Jan. 26.
