PALOS VERDES -- In the opening tournament of the spring season, the BYU women's golf team is tied for second place at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. After the first round, junior Natalia Jimenez and sophomore Daphne Vines lead the team tied for 10th place at 2-over-par.
"The team had a lot of good shots on the front nine," said BYU head coach Sue Nyhus. "Our players were very focused and showed their best golf skills."
The Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge is a 15-team tournament including 84 competitors and is being held at the par-71 Palos Verdes Golf Club. The tournament tees are set at 5,912 yards.
After a cold winter in Utah, the Cougars were grateful to see grass in California.
"It was great to play on green grass today," Nyhus said. "With such a beautiful day and warm weather, we were reminded of why we love to play golf."
The Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge continues Tuesday and Wednesday with 18 holes each day.
After this tournament BYU heads to Arizona to participate in the Wildcat Invitational on February 25 and 26.
