TEMPE -- Between the BYU men's and women's track teams, seven regional marks were set at the ASU Invitational on Saturday on Joe Selleh Track.
BYU sophomore Leif Arrhenius set the second-longest discus mark in the nation at the ASU Invitational on Saturday to lead the Cougars against some of the toughest competition in the nation.
Arrhenius, who finished second in the discus at the 2005 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships, finished second among collegiate throwers at the event with a toss of 196 feet 5 inches. Arizona State's Ryan Whiting, who won the shot put at indoor national a few weeks ago, threw 200 feet 6 inches.
"This is the first meet in which he has competed in almost three years," BYU men's coach Mark Robison said. "It's a 12-foot PR since he served his mission. It's unbelievable, and it's just the start for Leif."
Besides Arrhenius, five other BYU men set regional qualifying marks.
Junior Kyle Perry won the 1500 meters in 3:44.71, with senior Jacob Gustafsson nipping at his heels in 3:45.89. BYU finished with four runners in the top six in the 1500 meters. Sophomore Rich Nelson won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:06.30, freshman Chase Dalton won the javelin with a throw of 206 feet and junior Whitney Neves placed second in the pole vault with a jump of 17 feet 6.5 inches.
Junior Piret Kuresson led the way for the BYU women's team with a regional qualifying mark of 144 feet 9 inches in the javelin.
Sophomore Madara Dzalbe and senior Tawny Bybee took first-place finishes in their respective events. Dzalbe marked 38 feet 6.25 inches in the triple jump and Bybee ran a 9:49.70 in the 3000 meters.
Katie Bowen, a sophomore from Alpine, Utah, was the other part of the 1-2 finish in the 3000 meters, crossing the line in 9:51.45. Freshman Mindy Robins set personal bests in two events, including the 400-meter hurdles in which she placed second with a time of 1:03.61.
"Overall, we had a pretty solid meet," BYU women's coach Craig Poole said. "We had quite a few personal bests. I'm excited to see how we do as the season progresses."
