PROVO -- Practicing in half-pads on Tuesday, BYU's quarterbacks led the offense in several situational drills, two of which ended in the end zone.

Backed up on its own three-yard line, Max Hall and the first team offense struggled to get the momentum rolling after being called for two false starts. A 16-yard pass from Hall to Collie closed out the drive as the second team took the field.

After a quick third-and-out on the second drive, Hall retook the field at the 20-yard line. Tight end Dennis Pitta caught a six-yard pass to start things off, which was followed by a four-yard run by Manase Tonga. Hall connected with Fui Vakapuna for a five-yard gain, then found Pitta again for a five-yard touchdown pass.

The defense stepped up on the following drive, holding J.J. DiLuigi to a rush for no gain. After another false start call on the offense, Bryan Kariya recorded a short two-yard run. The drive ended after an incompletion by Kurt McEuen.

"The defense looks similar to how it looked at this point last season," said head coach Bronco Mendenhall. "When you look out there, the players may be different, but the play is the same."

Brenden Gaskins joined the first team offense for the final drive of the day. After a five-yard run by sophomore Harvey Unga, Gaskins found Vakapuna for a short two-yard completion. Gaskins then found Pitta on back-to-back passes for a combined 13 yards and a reception in the end zone.

Hall threw for 32 yards on 4-of-6 completions. Pitta led all receivers with 24 yards and two touchdown catches on the day
