WALNUT -- BYU 800-meter runner Keith Jensen ran the fastest collegiate time at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays on Friday, crossing the line in 1:49.75.
Jensen, a junior from Coppell, Texas, and an 800-meter indoor All-American, qualified for regionals with his sub-1:50 mark.
"Some guys shot out pretty quick, so I was fourth after 400 meters," Jensen said. "I knew I had to start moving up so I moved into second with 200 meters, and I closed in a 26-second 200 meters for the win."
BYU sophomore Angela Wagner finished third among collegiate runners in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best and regional qualifying time of 10:12.06. Wagner dropped 11.58 seconds off the time she set two weeks ago at the Stanford Invitational in her first-ever 3000-meter steeplechase.
"There is a big learning curve in the steeplechase," BYU women's distance coach Patrick Shane said. "It takes about three races to get comfortable so I expect Angela to drop yet another eight seconds off the next race she runs."
Carolyn Quebe and Katie Palmer also qualified for regionals in their respective events. Quebe, a senior from Plano, Texas, leads the Mountain West Conference after winning her heat in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:27.34, a lifetime best. Palmer, a freshman from Boulder City, Nev., ran the 800 meters in 2:08.72, a season-best time.
A few BYU athletes who didn't make the trip to southern California will be competing at the Utah State Mark Faldmo Invite on Saturday. Field events start at 10 a.m. and running events start at 11:45 a.m.
