PROVO -- Strong pitching solidified two shutout victories (8-0, 11-0) for the BYU softball team (33-15) in a doubleheader against Idaho State (7-23) Tuesday at Miller Park.
The Cougar pitching staff allowed only four hits and no errors in the two games. Not only was BYU strong defensively but at the plate as well. The Cougars claimed 21 hits on the night, including three home runs and one triple.
"We were able to maintain our focus tonight, and I was really pleased about that," said BYU head coach Gordon Eakin. "We have a really young team this year, and one thing we have battled is maintaining focus for long periods of time. Tonight they did well."
Shortstop Jessica Purcell went 5-for-6 between the two games, and first baseman Daniela Snow went 3-for-4 with 5 RBI. The end of the second game extended Amanda Vance's hitting streak to 15, the longest on the season for BYU. Vance went 1-for-2 in each game.
Pitcher Chrisite Zinanti shined in the first game as she pitched a two-hit shutout. Zinanti had six strikeouts in the game, striking out all three batters who came to the plate in the fourth inning.
The Cougars started strong during their first at bat. With runners on second and third, Angeline Quiocho hit a single to send second baseman Kristin Delahoussaye home.
The BYU team again dominated offensively in the fourth, scoring seven runs in the inning. The hot hitting began when Vance, with the bases loaded, hit a two-run single. Snow followed with a two-run double to center field. Jessica Purcell later came to the plate slamming a three-run home run, her 10th of the season. BYU finished the game ahead of ISU 8-0 when the eight-run rule was called after the top of the fifth inning.
BYU continued its hitting streak early in the second game, getting six hits and eight runs off three errors just in the first inning. Snow started the hitting for the Cougars after hitting a two-run double. Following Snow, Quiocho hit an RBI double deep to center field and scored off two fielding errors. Whitney Nix, a recent transfer from Idaho State, later came up to the plate and cleared the bases, hitting a two-run home run.
"I think the story of today's game is Whitney Nix, who hit a home run in her first at-bat," said Eakin. "I was tickled for her that she had such a strong game against Idaho State."
Caschjen Davis hit another runner in when she belted a triple to right field. The Cougars ended the inning with an 8-0 lead over the Bengals.
The runs continued throughout the game. In the second inning Jenkins grounded an infield RBI single. In the third, the Cougars hit back-to-back solo home runs by Davis and Vance. Purcell followed in the same inning with an RBI single of her own. The Cougars finished the second game topping the Bengals 11-0.
BYU jumps back into conference play later this week when the Cougars host San Diego State in a doubleheader Thursday and then play a two-game series against UNLV Friday and Saturday. The San Diego State game will be broadcast on The Mtn.
