PROVO -- BYU freshman Chase Dalton battled the snow and wind to win the men's decathlon at the 2008 BYU Robison Invitational.
Dalton, from Tigard, Oregon, scored 6,805 points after winning the javelin throw (190-10) and discus throw (130-08) on Thursday. Dalton was in third place after day one, but came through with solid performances to get the win.
Despite not finishing the 1,500 meters because of a leg injury, BYU junior Justin Palmer finished in third place with 6,410 points.
In the women's heptathlon, Idaho State sophomore Cassie Merkley held onto her first-day lead to win the heptathlon with 5,165 points.
BYU freshmen Chelsi Petersen and Mindy Robins didn't compete in the 800 meters of the heptathlon to rest for Friday's races. Despite not finishing, Petersen won the long jump with a jump of 19-08.25.
All running and field events will start on Friday, with the women's javelin starting at 11 a.m. and the women's 100-meter hurdles at 1 p.m.
Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for students and children enter for free. Youth up to age 14 wearing their track competition uniform are admitted free. Parking is free and will be available in the south stadium parking lot, north of Clarence Robison Track.
