HILL AIR FORCE -- Former BYU women's golfer Daphne Vines-Parker won the 2008 Utah Women's State Amateur in exciting fashion as she finished one shot beneath former Cougar Lachelle Poffenberger in sudden death.
Leading by one stroke at the 18th hole, Vines-Parker made a bogey while Poffenberger shot par to even the score and send the two into a sudden death finale.
After repeating the 18th and 16th holes and both shooting par on each, a showdown occurred on Hole 17 as Vines-Parker once again completed the hole at par and Poffenberger barely missed a putt for par to finish with a bogey resulting in the victory for Vines-Parker, her second Utah State Am victory in as many years.
Multiple current and former Cougars performed well at the tournament. Cougar junior Camille Gardner finished in fourth place and former Cougar Nicole Chandler placed fifth. BYU women's golf coach Sue Nyhus came in ninth place.
Vines-Parker played at BYU from 2006 to 2008 and married Matt Parker this past June. Daphne has transferred to the University of Louisville to complete her college career as Matt will attend dental school in the area.
As a sophomore, Vines-Parker had four top-20 finishes and led the Cougars at the Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic with a season-best third-place finish, ending the season with a 75.83 stroke average.
Vines-Parker began her BYU career competing in all 12 tournaments as a freshman and had the team's fourth-best stroke average of 76.42. She also finished in 10th place at the BYU Dixie Classic and was the second-lowest Cougar at the NCAA Championship.
