PROVO, Utah (Aug. 16. 2008) – Over 200 fans visited Haws Field for their first taste of BYU women’ soccer this season, and were treated to a 2-1 win by the Blue team Saturday night. Each team was tough defensively and had a balanced offensive attack.
“I saw a lot of good things tonight,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “It was a great opportunity to see new things and to see people in certain situations. It was good to see the freshmen get some action.”
The first goal for the Blue team came off a free kick from freshman Dana Oldroyd. Katie Larkin received the kick and found Kassidy Christensen in front of the goal at the 20-minute mark of the second period.
Kristi Dow-Jackson scored the equalizer for the White team when she was able to find the net at the 10-minute mark of the third period.
Kelsea Kakadelas scored the game-winning goal just two minutes later on a cross in front of the goal from Larkin.
“We’ve been working a lot on going forward,” said Coach Rockwood. “I saw some good combinations on the goals.”
A strong overall performance from both sides prevailed during the scrimmage, as neither team was able to establish much dominance over the other for any length of time.
“We saw things we need to work on,” said Rockwood, “but the energy, effort and excitement were there.”
The team played three 25-minute periods, and many players rotated through both the Blue and White teams.
The Cougars head on the road next week for their first two games of the season. BYU will face Cal Poly on Aug. 22 at 7:00 p.m., and then travel to LSU for a game Aug. 25th that will also kick off at 7:00 p.m.
The first home game for the team will be on Aug. 29, when the Cougars face Georgia at 7:00 p.m. Arizona will then visit South Field on Sept. 1 for a 4:00 p.m. scheduled start.
