ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (Sept. 18, 2008) – The BYU women’s golf team is off to a solid start at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico.
The Cougars finished Round 1 on Thursday afternoon at +17 309, good enough for a tie at No. 11 with Campbell University out of 16 schools participating.
Junior Shayla Forsey is leading the team at +3 and is tied at No. 32 in the overall field of golfers. She bogeyed the 5th hole but responded by scoring birdies on the No. 6 and 9 holes.
Senior team captain Natalia Jimenez is in a tie at No. 38 overall after she finished at +4, two times suffering bogeys and quickly turning around the next hole making birdies.
Sophomores Jade Bollinger and Sara Romero are in a tie at No. 47 completing the round at +5. Bollinger started off with a double bogey but came back with a birdie on No. 2. Romero also came back with a birdie after suffering a bogey in one instance.
Maggie Yuan finished Rd. 1 at +8 while junior Camille Gardner is golfing independently and is in a tie for No. 66 at +7.
“We started a little slow today and were unable to make up ground,” said head coach Sue Nyhus. “But we did get in good practice today and I think we’ll be ready for another round of golf tomorrow.”
Pepperdine is leading the field at even-par followed by Mountain West Conference schools New Mexico (+2) and Wyoming (+5). TCU, UNLV, Colorado State and San Diego State are also participating in the tournament.
