BERKELEY -- Several members of the BYU women’s tennis team found success as the first day of the Cal Nike Invitational wrapped up Saturday. Juniors Kristina Doerr and Chie Hayaska led the team, making it to the quarterfinal round of their respective draws.
Doerr’s first test of the tournament came against Cal senior Claire Ilcinkas, who ranked No. 22 in the preseason ITA poll. Doerr was able to defeat Ilcinkas in straight sets and move on to the Round of 16 where she overcame UC Davis’ Randi Schuler 6-1, 7-5.
Hayasaka also earned a spot in the quarterfinals of her draw after clinching the victory over Fresno State’s Bruna Paes 6-2, 6-4. Nevada’s Lais Ogata pushed Hayasaka to a 7-5 scoreline in the first set, but the Cougar overpowered her 6-3 in the second.
BYU freshman McCall Jones won her first match in the Round of 32 but eventually fell to No. 12 Melanie Gloria from Fresno State in three sets. Jones forced a tiebreak in the first set and won the second 6-1, but fell shy of the victory.
In doubles, junior Jocelyn Jensen and freshman Romina Nedakovic earned a place in the semifinals after winning their first match 8-4.
The tournament will continue through the weekend at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts.
