LAS -- Day two of the Mountain Region Championship concluded with two BYU men’s tennis doubles pairs making it to the Round of 16. Sophomores Evan Urbina and A.J. Young easily defeated their Utah opponents 8-2 and will face the No. 10 seed in the tournament from Montana State Friday. Joining them will be Cassidy Mears and Thomas Shubert who beat Spencer Marchant and Cole Paterson of Weber State 8-4.

In singles play, Shubert made it to the Round of 16 before losing in a close three-set match to Utah’s Wes Hancock. Hancock also ended Urbina’s hopes of continuing in the bracket the previous round when he defeated the Cougar 7-6, 6-3. Freshman Georgy Batrakov made it as far as the Round of 32 before falling to his New Mexico opponent 7-5, 6-4.

Batrakov, Urbina, Mears and Shubert will all continue play in the consolation bracket Friday and Saturday.

The regional tournament will continue through Saturday at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.
