PROVO -- BYU men’s golf head coach Bruce Brockbank announced this week that two highly sought-after prep golfers have signed national letters of intent to play golf at Brigham Young University.
Zachary Blair, of Ogden’s Fremont High School, and Tommy Higham of Shelley, Idaho, signed to play for the Cougars after spectacular high school careers.
“These are great kids that are coming to play for us,” Brockbank said. “Both have a tremendous amount of experience and exposure on a national level and have found success at the high school level.”
Blair, the son of former Cougar All-American Jimmy Blair (1974-77), led Fremont to two state championships and was named All-State all four years of his high school career.
He was named a 2008 Honorable Mention All-American and tied for 17th at the 2008 Polo Jr. Classic. Blair came in second at the Golf Pride Jr. Classic and tied for the No. 22 spot at the 2008 Footjoy Invitational. He also tied for ninth at the Wellstone Communities Junior at Craig Ranch.
Higham has led Shelley High School to three consecutive state titles and is a two-time individual state champion, on top of serving as Senior Class Vice-President. He was ranked as Golfweek’s No. 48 recruit for the class of 2009 and is an American Junior Golf Association HP Scholastic Jr. All-American.
In 2006, he made the U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier and was the Idaho Golf Association’s junior overall champion. He was the 2007 Jr. World Qualifier champion, placed third at the U.S. Open Qualifier and was the 2007 PGA Jr. Section champion.
He is a two-time member of the Jr. Americas Cup and the Eddie Hogan Cup.
“We hope these guys will continue to play in competitive tournaments to gain more experience and then come in here ready to work hard for us,” Brockbank said.
