PROVO -- BYU (10-2) moved up to No. 16 in the Bowl Championship Series standings with the completion of the college football season this weekend and now awaits its 2008 Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl date with Arizona on Dec. 20.
The Cougars moved up two spots in the BCS standings and also advanced in the major polls where they are ranked No. 16 in both USA Today Coaches Poll and Harris Interactive Poll and No. 17 in The Associated Press Top 25. BYU has won 20 of its last 22 games and been ranked each week since last cracking the polls on Nov. 18, 2007.
Fellow Mountain West Conference schools Utah (12-0) and TCU (10-2) remained No. 6 and No. 11, respectively, in the BCS standings.
Oklahoma is the new No. 1 in the BCS standings with Florida at No. 2. Texas is No. 3 with last week’s top-rated team, Alabama, falling to No. 4. The rest of the top 11 stayed the same with USC rounding out the top five followed by Utah, Texas Tech, Penn State, Boise State, Ohio State and TCU.
The highest-ranked team representing each Football Bowl Subdivision conference in the BCS standings are No. 1 Oklahoma (Big 12), No. 2 Florida (SEC), No. 5 USC (Pac-10), No. 6 Utah (MWC), No. 8 Penn State (Big Ten), No. 9 Boise State (WAC), No. 12 Cincinnati (Big East), No. 14 Georgia Tech (ACC) and No. 22 Ball State (MAC). No teams from Conference USA or the Sun Belt Conference are ranked in the BCS top-25 standings.
The AP rankings have Oklahoma ranked No. 2 with the top spot in the writers’ poll going to Florida.
