With an impressive (12-3, 2-1) record, BYU’s women’s basketball team takes to the road this week for two league games. The Cougars are at UNLV (8-9, 1-3) Wed., Jan. 21 at 7 p.m., PT. They then travel to battle SDSU (11-4, 2-1) on Sat., Jan. 24 in a 2 p.m., PT tip off.

This Week’s Two MWC Opponents
UNLV (Jan. 21, 2009) in Las Vegas, NV - 7 p.m. (PT)
UNLV has compiled an 8-9, 1-3 record to date under first-year head coach Kathy Oliver. The Rebels return four starters and a total of 11 letterwinners. Topping the list in scoring is senior center Shamela Hampton who is averaging 14.2 points and a team high 9.2 rebounds per game. She’s followed by Erica Helms who contributes an average of 11.8 points and 2.2 boards with Jamie Smith tallying 10.6 points and a second best rebound average, grabbing 8.5 boards per contest. Helms leads the team in the assist category dishing out a total of 56 to date while Hampton heads the steals category with 27 on the season.

Last Meeting: These two league foes met twice during the MWC race last season with each team winning on its home court. In Provo, the Cougars won 67-55 while the Rebels won in Las Vegas in overtime, 73-68. The last two times BYU has played at Cox Pavilion, the games headed into overtime, with UNLV eventually getting the victories. Overall, BYU has a 8-8 record in Las Vegas. Their last win was a 55-51 decision on Feb. 11, 2006.
SAN DIEGO STATE (Jan. 24, 2009) in San Diego, CA - 2 p.m. (PT)
The Aztecs are off to an impressive 11-4, 2-1 record picking up league wins over Air Force and Wyoming at Cox Arena where they are undefeated at 8-0. Three players are scoring in double figures for San Diego State led by Paris Johnson’s 15.1 points and a team high 8.3 boards per game. Junior guards Jene Morris and Quenese Davis follow with 14.8 and 10.9 points respectively. Davis also tops the list in assists dishing out a total of 84 to date while Morris leads in steals with 43. Head coach Beth Burns is in her 12th season at the helm of the women’s basketball program at SDSU.

After the two road games, the Cougar team hosts league foe and instate rival Utah in another Deseret First Duel contest on Wed., Jan. 28 before heading to Laramie to battle Wyoming on Sat., Jan. 31st. The home game vs. the Utes tips off at 7 p.m., and will air live on BYUTV.
