COLORADO SPRINGS -- BYU junior Amy Menlove has competed in two meets this season with both performances earning her Mountain West Conference Player of the Week.
Menlove, an All-American and Academic All-MWC honoree from Sandy, Utah, won her second MWC Player of the Week and third of her career with impressive results at the Cherry & Silver Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center last Saturday.
“It’s a great honor,” Menlove said. “It’s really exciting to be out there competing with my teammates and representing BYU. “
Menlove finished with an altitude-adjusted, NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8.29 in the women’s 60-meter hurdles, placing her second only to former Georgia Tech standout Shantia Moss, who was the 2006-07 60m hurdle National Indoor Champion. Menlove’s time currently ranks first in the MWC and seventh in the nation (according to TrackShark.com). The time is also third fastest in MWC history.
“We are really proud of Amy,” said BYU women’s track head coach Craig Poole. “She is an awesome athlete who earns these awards through hard work.”
Menlove also received an NCAA provisional qualifying mark by taking first in the long jump (20’-6.50”) at the Cherry & Silver Invitational. The mark places her first in conference and eighth in the country (according to TrackShark.com).
Next up for Menlove will be a trip to Seattle this Friday at the UW Invitational in Seattle where she will compete in the pentathlon. The pentathlon is a combined event including the 800m, 60m hurdles, shot put, high jump and long jump, Menlove is currently the top-ranked pentathlete in the country (according to TrackShark.com).
“I’ll be focusing on the pentathlon this week,” Menlove said. “I’m going to go out there, give it my best and try to earn an automatic bid.”
Menlove’s pentathlon point total at the BYU Cougar Invite ranks third all-time in the BYU record books and was two points shy of an NCAA automatic bid.
