PROVO -- BYU men’s basketball coach Dave Rose announced Monday that Logan Magnusson, a 6-foot-6 forward from Heber City, Utah, has signed a national letter of intent to join the program for the 2009-10 season.
“We’re obviously really excited to have Logan join our team,” Rose said. “He adds depth and brings toughness, versatility and a great winning attitude, having been a part of two state titles at Wasatch High and a junior college national championship at Salt Lake Community College. Logan has benefitted from great coaching at Wasatch High School, Dixie College and SLCC.”
Magnusson comes to BYU after starting for Norm Parrish on Salt Lake Community College’s 2009 NJCAA Division I National Title team that finished with a 31-6 overall record. A do-it-all player, Magnusson averaged 8.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and a team-best 3.5 assists during SLCC’s championship campaign. He also shot .530 from the field, .464 from downtown and .794 from the free throw line.
During the 2008-09 season Magnusson helped SLCC put together an 18-game winning streak during the regular season and win the Region 18 tournament and district playoffs to advance to the national tournament in Hutchinson, Kan. In the national tournament the Bruins took down four top 10 opponents—No. 7 Shelton State, No. 10 North Dakota State College of Science, No. 1 Chipola and No. 6 Midland—to claim the title. Magnusson earned honorable mention all-region honors in helping SLCC win its first national title in program history.
As a freshman in 2005-06 Magnusson averaged 8.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists at Dixie State College while playing for Jon Judkins. After helping the Rebels to a 21-12 record and a trip to the Region 18 championship game Magnusson served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in British Columbia, Canada. In high school he earned all-state honors and won back-to-back state titles while playing for his father Lonnie Magnusson at Wasatch High School.
The team also announced that backup point guard Matt Pinegar is leaving the program but will remain at BYU to complete his education. Pinegar, who redshirted in 2007-08, was a freshman in 2008-09 and played in nine games. He missed the final 18 games due to injury.
“We really appreciate Matt‘s contribution to the program the last two years,” Rose said. “He helped us win two regular season conference titles and we wish him the best.”
A native of Provo, Utah, Pinegar played his high school ball at Timpview High School and served a two-year mission in Toronto.
