NORMAN -- BYU golfers Robbie Fillmore and Brady Johnson have been honored by the Golf Coaches Association of America as Cleveland Golf / Srixon All-America Scholars following a successful 2008-09 season.
The GCAA awards student-athletes from NCAA Divisions I, II and the NAIA. The BYU duo was given the honor along with 106 others from Division I.
"The two of them are the epitome of a scholar-athlete," said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. "They work extremely hard on and off the course and they're great kids."
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70 percent of the team’s competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships. Student-athletes must also have a stroke average under 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. In addition, the recipient must be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Johnson and Fillmore met the above requirements as they led the team in stroke averages at 72.8 and 73.4, respectively. The seniors-to-be were recently named Academic All-Mountain West Conference and had multiple Top-20 finishes during their junior campaign.
Johnson enjoyed a season-best second-place finish at the PING Cougar Classic after shooting 10-under-par. The highlight of the year for the Mill Bay, British Columbia native came after qualifying for the NCAA West Regional and eventually turning in a fifth-place performance at 8-under-par and shooting a career-low round of 67 in the opening round. He later competed at the NCAA Championships where he shot 13-over-par at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Fillmore played his best tournament of the season at the MWC Championships in which he placed seventh overall at 1-under-par with a season round low of 67 in the second round. He also qualified to compete at the NCAA West Regional with Johnson. The Salt Lake City native had the best finish at several tournaments for the Cougars.
"They both sacrifice in order to succeed and they give it their all," Brockbank said. "It's an honor to be associated with them."
