PROVO -- BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe today announced that Brigham Young University and Oregon State University have agreed to a home-and-home football series for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
The two schools are scheduled to meet on Sept. 3, 2011, in Corvallis, Ore., and again on Sept. 1, 2012, in Provo, Utah.
“We are excited about this series with Oregon State,” Holmoe said. “Both teams have tremendous coaches who have enjoyed a lot of success. The two-game series should be very entertaining.”
The Cougars and Beavers both rank among the top-25 programs nationally in number of wins over the past four seasons. During that span Oregon State has averaged nine victories per season under head coach Mike Riley, and BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall has led the Cougars to 10 or more wins each of the last four years.
An Oregon State alumnus, Mendenhall played for the Beavers the last time the two schools met in a regular-season game back in 1986, helping Oregon State defeat BYU 10-7 at Cougar Stadium. Mendenhall played defensive back and safety for the Beavers from 1986-87.
BYU and Oregon State have faced off nine times since the series began in 1955 with the Beavers holding a 5-4 advantage. The last meeting took place in December at the 2009 Maaco Bowl Las Vegas, where the Cougars downed the Beavers 44-20 in a battle of two top-20 teams. Oregon State holds a 4-1 series lead in Corvallis, while BYU maintains a 2-1 edge in Provo.
