AUBURN -- Adam Tebbs led the BYU men’s golf team Monday as it opened 2010 play in 11th place at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational in Auburn, Washington.
“We had a couple of bright spots today,” said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. “Given the windy and rainy conditions we played pretty well, but we have a lot to work on.”
Tebbs, a sophomore, and senior Cameron Edens put in consistent effort to lead the Cougars on the 7,304 yard, par-72 Washington National Golf Club. Tebbs, who recently returned from a mission, followed a first-round 75 with a 1-over 73 in the second round to finish the day tied for 35th place at four over par. He recorded seven birdies in the two rounds.
“It was nice to see Adam (Tebbs) do well and put up a couple of good scores,” Brockbank said. “He is only about five months removed from his mission and he played well.”
Edens, an Arizona State transfer, finished day one just one stroke behind Tebbs, shooting rounds of 74 and 75 to move into a tie for 28th place.
Senior Esteban Calisto came back from a seven-over 79 in round one to sink seven birdies and record a one-under 71 in round two. Sophomores Zac Blair and Alton Anderson each posted 75’s in the first round to help move the Cougars into a tie for ninth place after one round. Both Blair and Anderson finished round two with 4-over 76’s to finish day one at +7.
As a team, the Cougars improved on a first round 299 to shoot a 295 in the second round.
“We had some pretty good effort today,” Brockbank said. “We just need a couple of guys to step up and lead the way.”
Included in the 14-team field are a number of teams ranked in the top 25 in the Golf World/NIKE Golf pre-season coaches poll, including Oregon (No. 5), Washington (No. 6) and Texas A&M (No. 9). Future West Coast Conference opponents Gonzaga and Pepperdine, who stands in first place after day one, are also competing.
The Cougars look to climb the leader board on day two, with paired starts beginning at 7:30 a.m. PST.
