PROVO -- BYU men’s golf coach Bruce Brockbank announced Thursday that four prep standouts have committed to join the Cougars in 2011 by signing national letters of intent. The all-Utah recruiting class includes Patrick Fishburn of Fremont High and Devon Purser of Syracuse High, who will join Dalton Stanger of Orem High and McCoy Willey from Dixie High.
“This is as good of a recruiting class as we’ve had in a long time,” Brockbank said. “There are a lot of good players in Utah and this group definitely stands out.”
Fishburn, a Farr West native, was a four-time all-state performer and led the Titans to the class 5A state championship in October, posting a second-round 65 to finish 8-under. He was two strokes back of winning the title as a junior and one stroke behind the leader his sophomore and freshman years.
Known for his power from the tee box and a soft touch around the greens, Fishburn recently shot a 58 at the Ben Lomond Golf Course in Harrisville, Utah, setting a new course record.
Purser, also a four-year all-state golfer, finished only two strokes behind Fishburn to tie for third in the state championship tournament. Just a year ago, he shot an even-par 72 in the final round of the 2009 state tournament to help lead Syracuse to the team title.
Purser, who originally committed to UNLV, led the Titans to a team victory at the Antigua National High School Invitational in September by shooting rounds of 68 and 67 to capture the individual title.
Stanger, an Orem High product, finished second at the class 4A state championships in October, shooting rounds of 76-70—146. While at Orem, he was named all-region four times and first team 4A all-state three times. In four years, Stanger won medalist honors in 10 Region 7 tournaments.
In July 2010, Stanger helped Team USA defeat Canada 14-12 and capture the IJGA North America Cup at Hilton Head, S.C.
Willey completed an illustrious high school career in which he captured two-consecutive 4A individual state titles as a sophomore an a junior by finishing fourth as a senior in October.
“These golfers are all capable of coming in and making an immediate impact,” Brockbank said. “It’s an exciting class and we’re hoping they can work hard and progress to help the program.”
